about
Sue McHugh has been a professional singer on the Scottish jazz scene for over 20 years and still sings regularly with jazz bands. But when she began to play the harp, she quickly discovered that she loved singing with this amazing instrument and was encouraged by her then harp teacher (the legendary Isobel Mieras) to pursue this with the words “I think this is your future” - what a moment! While trying to master the complexities of the lever harp, Sue started learning more and more songs, a seemingly random selection that included a mixture of her favourite songs and what she thought might be popular with audiences. After a few years in a duo with a guitar playing friend, Covid 19 struck the world and she was stuck in her practice room alone with her harp, microphone and an underused loop/effects pedal, a perfect opportunity to learn! Lockdown gave her the opportunity to work on new songs, practice and hone her looping skills and, after lockdown ended, she was ready to perform solo.
Sue has been garnering new fans wherever she plays and her harpVox jukebox gigs are particularly popular. This is where the audience all get to pick a song from the jukebox list and Sue pulls their selection cards out of a 'hat' (actually a Jura whisky tin!) and plays them. Sue loves to interact with her audience and a harpVox jukebox gig is always a fun experience for everyone. And, while there are usually some regular favourites that are selected, this means that every gig is very different as there is such a diverse range of songs!
Sue will be happy to tailor her setlist for your function, or she can play her own selection of suitable background music. Or, if your guests are up for being involved, harpVox jukebox is an option. Or a mixture of all three – as a seasoned performer, Sue is adept at reading the room and knowing what will go down well.
You can contact Sue at sue@harpvox.com with any questions and she will be happy to chat!
